1. Remove carpet, all staples and any other objects that keep tread from sitting flat. If stained and polyurethane, rough up finish so glue will adhere to old surface. If you have open treads remove balusters.
2. Once stairs are clean and prepared use a flush cut saw to cut nose overhang at stair stringer and cut back to the riser. Next, cut stair nose off, measure overhang and add 1/8 of an inch to that measurement. Take a circular saw which is set to the thickness of tread and cut stair nose. Note however the saw will not go all the way to the stringer. Use a chisel to cut away the rest of the tread nosing.
3. Once all treads are cut, put 2-3 screws through the tread into the riser to help with any squeaks.
4. Take felt paper or cardboard and make a template which you will copy onto the tread, cut tread, and fit. Once all treads are fitted mark them 1,2,3 etc. so you will know where they go. Do this also with the risers.
5. Once all the risers and treads are fitted you are ready to install. Start at the bottom step and apply riser first using construction adhesive PL premium Polyurethane glue (any other type will not be covered under the warranty). Apply glue with ½” beads no less than 5 beads from top to bottom and nail with finish nailer, some wood species will need to be pre-drilled.
6. Apply tread but be sure the tread is level. If the tread is not level, use shims, which should be glued down (any gaps may cause tread to crack or split). Once the tread is level, apply Pl premium polyurethane construction adhesive (any other type will not be covered under the warranty) with ½ beads with no less than 5 to 6 beads. From front to back, put 1 bead of glue on nose overhang edge and nail with finish nailer, some wood species will need to be pre-drilled.
7. Repeat steps 5-6 applying riser on top of tread and so on.
8. Once done, apply stair cover molding under stair tread nose to cover the gap between riser and tread.
9. Replace Balusters. Plum down from the hole in railing mark and drill hole to the thickness of baluster bottom pin. Note: best is to purchase new balusters will be easier to install and will also add a newer look to your staircase. Balusters can be purchased through Stair Parts Unlimited Inc.
10. On open stairs, you may need to use a stair bracket, which may be purchased through Stair Parts Unlimited Inc.
